Derek, a Plant Engineer, was nice enough to give us a full tour of the

Burning waste is a better way to stop the landfills
from having too much trash and the heat from the burning can be captured
for electricity. There are companies that use this method to generate
electricity on a large scale quite like a powerplant but one that is
powered by burning trash. MSW = municipal solid waste is the trash
that they burn to produce steam that runs the turbines that fuels homes
with electricity. RDF = Refuse derived fuel. This is the excess trash,
but at HPower it is the ash left after the burning process. They can
also take the ashes and can turn them into a bricks that could be
used to make small walls. The brick isn't sturdy enough to build
a house with. In Hawaii, they have not started using the ash to make
brick, so it is returned to the landfill. However, 90% of the waste
destined for the landfill is burned for energy.
